Copier Cleaning and Maintenance

A complete understanding of the optics structure of the machine you are servicing is a must at this point.

When cleaning copier optics systems, proceed with caution. The mirrors used to reflect images from the scanning bed to the photoconductor in a copier are not the same as the mirrors in your house. In household mirrors, a reflective film coats the back of a sheet of glass. In the optical mirrors of copiers, this is reversed; the film coats the top of the glass. Because of this structure, the reflective film on copier mirrors is easily scratched. Using a soft, lint-free cloth and minimal pressure is important.

Caution should also be taken when choosing a glass cleaner. Some commercial cleaners readily available in retail outlets may be too strong. All copier parts suppliers will offer some type of glass/mirror cleaner that is gentle yet works well. For many years, alcohol was recommended but it has proven to be damaging in some cases.

The lens and table glass are not as delicate as the mirrors so you may use a stronger cleaning and more pressure when rubbing with a cleaning cloth. For optimal results, clean both sides of the table glass and lens.

Different Coated Paper Types

Paper has a lot of properties that should be taken into account to achieve the excellent quality that we seek. First is the contrast. Contrast is the key element between paper and toner. The paler or whiter the paper, the brighter the graphics and text will be. Second element is the texture. The smoother the paper is, the easier toner can transfer to it. Nevertheless, very smooth papers are sometimes difficult to feed.

"Coating - Copier paper needs some type of clay or dust coating to help the paper separate and feed it. Also, most people ask the question, Does it matter which side of the paper is copied first? And the answer is, You get the best results when you copy the proper side first. Most copier paper will have some type of indicator as to which side should be copied on. The construction of the copier will determine if the paper has to be placed up or down so the correct side is copied first."

Coated papers are mostly used in printing process colors. The clay which finishes the coated sheets holds the color pigments on the surface of the sheet and causes the images to look brighter and sharper. They provide a brilliant opaque base for readable, crisp typography. They're popularly known use is in printing brochures, catalog, flyers, newsletters and the likes.

Copiers that cost more than a couple thousand pounds are most often rented or leased, but they can also be bought outright. Leases for photocopiers typically extend for three to five years.

The capital cost of printers may be relatively inexpensive but the cost of Consumables, Maintenance plays an important part in budgetary decisions. 3. What's your copy and print volume?

It's always worth assessing your current usage by conducting a quick print audit of
average pages printed per month, A4 or A3 requirements, Black & white usage and
Colour usage. Take a long-term view and consider the potential growth of your company.

4. Colour and Mono?

Colour is undoubtedly where the future lies. Although the manufactures are obviously keen to push colour copiers, as it increases their margins on consumables, remember the best business MFP's do offer mono and colour simultaneously. It's also possible to disable the colour on the MFP's if you do not need colour now but want it in the future.
